Delhi Reservation Protest: Hundreds Gather as Demonstrators Demand Changes to Quota System



New Delhi, August 25, 2026: A series of demonstrations over India's reservation system has drawn attention in Delhi, with protesters calling for reforms to caste-based quotas and greater consideration of economic circumstances when determining eligibility for government support.

The recent demonstrations have taken place at different locations, including Jantar Mantar and Connaught Place, amid heightened political and public debate over reservation policies. Reports indicate that some gatherings were held without the required police permission, leading to multiple detentions.



Hundreds Gather at Connaught Place

On August 23, around 300 people gathered at Connaught Place's Outer Circle to protest against caste-based reservation and demand changes to the existing quota framework.

Protesters carried placards and raised slogans calling for greater emphasis on economic criteria. They argued that government assistance should reach economically disadvantaged people regardless of caste. Police said more than 20 protesters were detained because the demonstration had not received permission.

The demonstration was associated with the Reservation Hatao Andolan, a movement that has used social media to mobilise supporters around demands for changes to India's reservation system.



Earlier Demonstration at Jantar Mantar

The latest gathering followed a larger demonstration at Jantar Mantar on August 21. More than 50 people were reportedly detained during the protest, according to media reports.

Participants called for a broader review of the reservation framework and argued that economic disadvantage should receive greater consideration. Some protesters have also called for changes involving the existing quota system in education and employment.

The demonstrations have generated significant attention online, although Delhi Police have also warned people about misleading information regarding protest permissions and locations.



Police Clarify Permission Status

Delhi Police have stressed that not every protest promoted on social media had official permission.

Police said that no permission had been granted for certain proposed gatherings at Jantar Mantar and other locations, while an authorised demonstration by the Reservation Hatao Andolan had separately received a no-objection certificate for a limited gathering at Ramlila Ground.

The distinction became important after videos and social-media posts circulated claiming that particular venues had been officially approved for protests.

A fact-check also found that one widely shared video being presented as footage from the Delhi protests was actually from an older demonstration in Jaipur.



What Are the Protesters Demanding?

The protesters' demands vary, but a central issue has been the argument that economic circumstances should play a larger role in determining access to government assistance and reservation benefits.

Some demonstrators have called for a review of the existing caste-based reservation framework, while others have raised concerns about the implementation of the creamy-layer principle and the distribution of reservation benefits.
