US Pauses Immigrant Visa Appointments Worldwide Amid Immigration Crackdown

Washington, August 26, 2026: The United States has reportedly paused or rescheduled immigrant visa appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, adding another major development to the Trump administration's broader immigration crackdown. The move comes as the State Department launches global training for consular officers focused on strengthening and standardising the screening of immigrant visa applicants.

The pause has created uncertainty for applicants who were preparing to move permanently to the United States. Reports say some scheduled interviews have been cancelled or rescheduled, while the State Department has not provided a clear timeline for when normal appointment scheduling will resume.

Why Has the US Paused Immigrant Visa Appointments?

The State Department says its consular officers are undergoing a global training initiative designed to improve the consistency of visa screening and vetting. The training is particularly focused on evaluating whether applicants could become dependent on U.S. public benefits.

The development follows the administration's increased emphasis on the **public-charge standard**, under which immigration authorities assess whether certain applicants are likely to become primarily dependent on government assistance. The State Department has also recently introduced a pilot program allowing consular officers to require certain immigrant visa applicants to obtain a public-charge bond.

Who Is Affected?

The reported pause applies to immigrant visa processing and appointments, which generally covers people seeking permanent residence in the United States through an immigrant visa.

It is important to distinguish this development from nonimmigrant visas such as tourist, student and many temporary work visas. The State Department continues to process nonimmigrant visas, although applicants now face additional location and screening requirements in some circumstances.

The State Department's current guidance says immigrant visa applicants are generally expected to interview in the country where they reside or, in certain circumstances, their country of nationality.

What Happens to Existing Appointments?

Applicants affected by the latest pause may receive notifications about changes to their scheduled interviews. Reports indicate that some appointments have been cancelled or rescheduled as the training programme gets underway.

The situation is still developing, and applicants should check communications from the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate for instructions regarding individual cases.

Broader Immigration Restrictions

The latest move comes amid a series of immigration-policy changes introduced by the Trump administration.

Earlier in 2026, the State Department implemented restrictions affecting nationals of multiple countries under Presidential Proclamation 10998. The measures fully or partially suspended visa issuance for nationals of designated countries, subject to specified exceptions.

The administration has also expanded screening and vetting requirements for several visa categories. In March, the State Department announced expanded online-presence reviews for additional categories of nonimmigrant visa applicants, building on earlier screening requirements for H-1B, H-4, F, M and J applicants.

H-1B Changes Add to Uncertainty

The immigrant-visa appointment pause comes alongside wider changes affecting the U.S. immigration system, including developments surrounding the H-1B programme.

However, H-1B visas are nonimmigrant visas, so they should not be confused with the immigrant-visa appointment pause described above. The two developments are part of a broader period of significant changes to U.S. immigration policy but involve different visa categories.

For applicants and families planning immigration to the United States, the latest development means that processing timelines may remain uncertain while the State Department carries out its review and training programme.

What Applicants Should Do

Applicants whose immigrant visa interviews have been affected should monitor official communications from the U.S. embassy or consulate handling their case. They should also check the U.S. State Department's visa announcements for updated guidance.

The State Department has not announced a definitive date for the worldwide return to normal immigrant visa appointment scheduling. As a result, applicants should rely on official notifications rather than assuming a particular rescheduling date.

The latest pause represents another significant change in U.S. immigration processing and could affect thousands of people seeking permanent residence while the administration continues to tighten screening and eligibility procedures.
