Ajit Doval in Beijing for Crucial India-China Border Talks With Wang Yi



Beijing, August 25, 2026: India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has travelled to Beijing for the 25th round of Special Representatives' talks on the India-China boundary question, where he is meeting Chinese Foreign Minister and China's Special Representative Wang Yi.

The high-level discussions come as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilize relations following years of tensions along their disputed Himalayan border. Doval arrived in Beijing on Monday for a two-day visit at Wang Yi's invitation.



25th Round of Special Representatives' Talks

The meeting between Doval and Wang Yi is part of the long-running Special Representatives mechanism established to address the India-China boundary dispute.

The two sides are expected to discuss the boundary question and ways to maintain **peace and tranquillity along the border**. The talks are particularly important because the Line of Actual Control remains a major source of tension between the two countries.

The latest round also represents continued engagement between senior Indian and Chinese officials after several years of heightened military and diplomatic tensions.



Doval Meets Chinese Vice President

Before the boundary talks, Doval met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing.

Relations deteriorated sharply following the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash, after which both sides increased military deployments and infrastructure along parts of the frontier.

Since then, diplomatic and military-level talks have attempted to reduce tensions and restore stability. The two governments reached a disengagement agreement in 2024, but several issues connected to the wider boundary dispute remain unresolved.

Talks Come Ahead of Possible Xi Jinping Visit

Doval's Beijing visit is also taking place ahead of the BRICS summit scheduled in New Delhi for September 12–13.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend the summit, although his participation has not yet been officially confirmed. If the visit goes ahead, it would be Xi's first trip to India in seven years and could provide an important opportunity for direct engagement between the two countries' leaders.

The timing has increased attention on the latest India-China talks, as both governments appear interested in maintaining the recent improvement in bilateral engagement.



Broader India-China Relations

While the border remains the most sensitive issue between New Delhi and Beijing, the relationship also includes significant economic and diplomatic ties.

Both countries have an interest in preventing border tensions from disrupting wider engagement. Recent senior-level meetings indicate that the two sides are attempting to create greater predictability in their relationship while continuing to manage disagreements.

For India, maintaining peace along the frontier remains a key security priority. For China, improving relations with India could also support broader regional diplomatic objectives.
