Nepal-Tibet Flash Flood Death Toll Surpasses 900 as More Than 4,000 Remain Missing



Kathmandu, August 31, 2026: The death toll from catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border has surpassed 900, as rescue operations entered their sixth day and thousands of people remained missing across the disaster-hit Himalayan region.

Nepal's disaster authorities reported 903 deaths and 4,247 missing people on the Nepalese side. In China's Tibet region, authorities had earlier reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, bringing the combined toll to at least 919 dead and nearly 4,800 missing.



Rescue Operations Enter Sixth Day

Rescue teams from Nepal and China are continuing an extensive search across areas devastated by the flooding, with difficult terrain, damaged roads and continuing weather threats complicating operations.

Nepal's army, police and disaster-response agencies are working alongside international rescue teams to reach stranded people. The disaster has severely affected settlements, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure in the mountainous region.

The search has become increasingly urgent as thousands of people remain unaccounted for. Nepal's authorities say the full scale of the disaster is still being assessed, with the number of casualties and missing people continuing to change as rescuers reach previously inaccessible areas.



Glacial Collapse Triggered Catastrophic Flooding

The disaster began on August 26, when a major collapse involving a glacier and underlying rock high in the Himalayan region triggered a massive surge of water, mud and debris.

The flood struck areas along the **Bhote Koshi River near the Nepal-Tibet border**, sweeping through communities and infrastructure. Scientific analysis based on satellite imagery indicated that a collapse beneath a glacier played a major role in triggering the devastating event.

Entire villages and project sites were damaged as the torrent moved downstream, while some bodies were reportedly carried far from the areas where the initial flooding occurred.







Hundreds of Hydropower Workers Feared Missing

One of the biggest concerns for rescuers is the fate of workers trapped or missing at hydropower projects in the affected region.

Officials say hundreds of workers remain unaccounted for, with some feared to be trapped inside tunnels that were cut off or filled with mud and debris after the flooding. Rescue teams are racing to reach these sites as time becomes an increasingly serious factor.

The damage to roads and remote location of several hydropower facilities have made the rescue effort particularly difficult.



Foreign Nationals Also Among the Missing

Hundreds of foreign nationals are among those still missing, according to Nepalese authorities.

The affected region includes routes used by international tourists and pilgrims travelling towards Tibet, including areas connected to journeys to **Mount Kailash**. Nepal's disaster agency said hundreds of foreigners remained unaccounted for as search operations continued.

Countries including India have increased assistance and coordination as the scale of the humanitarian emergency has become clearer.



Fresh Flood Risks Complicate Rescue Efforts

Rescue operations have also been affected by continuing concerns about rainfall and rising water levels.

Authorities have issued fresh warnings in some affected areas as unstable conditions in the Himalayan region continue to pose risks to survivors and rescue teams

The continuing threat has added pressure to an already difficult operation, as emergency personnel must balance the urgent need to reach missing people with the risks of further flooding and landslides.

Nepal's government has described the disaster as an **“unimaginable and heartbreaking”** national crisis, as authorities struggle to assess the full extent of the damage.

With at least 903 confirmed deaths in Nepal alone and thousands still missing, the catastrophe is now one of the most severe natural disasters to strike the Himalayan region in recent years.

The immediate priority remains the search for survivors, particularly in isolated settlements and hydropower tunnels. Relief agencies are also working to provide food, shelter and medical assistance to displaced families.
