Indian Citizen Killed in Kyiv Strike as Russian Attacks Hit Ukraine

Kyiv, September 1, 2026: An Indian citizen was among at least 12 people killed in a major overnight Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The identity of the Indian national has not been publicly disclosed as authorities continue to release details about the victims.

Heavy Overnight Attack on Kyiv

The latest attack came during the sixth consecutive day of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital and nearby areas. Ukrainian authorities said drones and ballistic missiles were used in the overnight assault, with residential areas and railway infrastructure among the locations hit.

At least eight people were killed in Kyiv, while another four died in the surrounding Kyiv region.

The Indian citizen was among the 12 people confirmed dead, according to Zelenskyy's statement reported by international media. Further details about the person's background and circumstances have not yet been officially released.

Railway Facilities and Residential Areas Hit

Russian strikes caused damage at several locations across Kyiv. Six railway employees were reported killed after railway facilities were hit, according to the head of Ukraine's state rail group.

In the nearby city of Boryspil, a residential building and other sites were damaged, leaving four people dead and several others injured. Ukrainian authorities said around 50 people were evacuated from the affected building.

The attack added to concerns over the increasing intensity of air strikes against Ukraine, with residents in Kyiv facing repeated air-raid alerts in recent days.

Zelenskyy Calls for Stronger Air Defences

Following the attack, Zelenskyy called for increased international support for Ukraine's air-defence capabilities.

Ukraine has repeatedly asked its allies for additional systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and other incoming aerial threats. The latest strikes involved both missiles and newer jet-powered drones, which Ukrainian authorities say are more difficult to intercept.

The attacks also came as European officials gathered for discussions on strengthening Ukraine's air defences.

Russia and Ukraine Exchange Claims

Russia's Defence Ministry said it had targeted military and energy facilities in Kyiv, Odesa and surrounding regions. Ukraine, meanwhile, said residential areas and civilian infrastructure were among the locations affected by the strikes.

The wider conflict has continued to escalate through long-range attacks, with both Russia and Ukraine striking infrastructure inside each other's territories.

Incident Highlights War's International Impact

The death of an Indian citizen underscores how the Russia-Ukraine war continues to affect people from many countries.

The incident comes as India continues to call for an end to the conflict. Just a day before the latest strike, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the war needed to end for humanity's sake and reiterated India's support for efforts aimed at achieving peace.

As rescue and recovery operations continue in the Kyiv region, Ukrainian authorities are expected to provide further information about the victims and the full extent of the damage.

The incident remains a developing story, and the reported casualty figures could change as authorities complete their assessments.
