Pornhub Returns to Australia After Adopting Apple-Based Age Verification
SYDNEY, October 7, 2026 has resumed service in Australia after an eight-month absence, following the introduction of Apple's device-level age-verification system designed to help online services comply with the country's stricter age-assurance requirements.
Pornhub's parent company, Aylo, said it was restoring access for eligible adult users whose Apple devices have confirmed that they are adults through Apple's Australian age-verification process.
Pornhub Left Australia in March
Aylo withdrew Pornhub and several of its other services from Australia in March as the country's new online-safety rules came into effect.
The regulations require services providing age-restricted material to take appropriate steps to establish whether users are adults. Australia's eSafety Commissioner says simply asking users to confirm that they are 18 or older is no longer sufficient.
At the time, Aylo argued that website-level age verification could create privacy risks and might not effectively prevent minors from reaching inappropriate material elsewhere online.
Apple Device Verification Changes the Situation
Apple has since introduced age-verification capabilities in Australia that operate at the device level.
Under Apple's approach, age-related safety protections are enabled by default, while adults who have successfully confirmed their age can receive access to age-restricted services. This allows services such as Pornhub to rely on an age signal from the device rather than independently collecting age-verification information from every user.
Aylo said Apple's system represents a significant improvement over approaches that require individual websites to collect or process sensitive information.
Aylo Supports Device-Level Age Assurance
Aylo has previously advocated for device-based age verification, arguing that the approach can provide stronger privacy protections than requiring multiple websites to verify users separately.
Following Apple's Australian update, the company said it considered the system one of the stronger approaches currently available for preventing minors from accessing age-restricted material.
The company's decision to restore service therefore represents a shift from its earlier position in Australia, when it chose to withdraw rather than implement the country's initial requirements.
Australia's Online-Safety Rules
Australia's age-assurance framework covers more than adult websites. The country's online-safety rules also apply to areas including certain social-media services, app distribution platforms, online games and other services involving age-restricted material.
The Australian eSafety Commissioner says the rules are intended to reduce children's exposure to pornography and other age-inappropriate content.
Platforms that fail to comply with applicable requirements can face significant financial penalties.

Privacy Remains a Major Issue
While device-level verification has received support from Aylo, privacy remains an important part of Australia's broader age-verification debate.
Critics have questioned how age-assurance systems handle personal information and whether different verification technologies could create additional privacy or security risks.
Australia's eSafety Commissioner says companies must comply with privacy requirements and minimise the collection of personal information when implementing age-assurance measures.
A Wider Test for Age Verification
The Australian development reflects a broader international shift toward requiring online platforms to establish users' ages before allowing access to age-restricted material.
Similar debates are taking place in the United Kingdom and other jurisdictions, with technology companies and regulators examining whether device-level verification can provide stronger child-safety protections while reducing the amount of personal information shared directly with individual websites.
For Apple, the Australian rollout also demonstrates how device-level age assurance could become an important part of online-safety regulation.
What Comes Next
Pornhub's return does not end the debate over Australia's age-verification rules. Instead, it provides a real-world test of whether device-based age assurance can satisfy regulators while addressing privacy concerns raised by technology companies.
The Australian government's approach, Apple's technology and Aylo's decision could also influence how other online platforms respond to similar age-verification requirements in other countries.
For now, the development marks a significant change from earlier this year: Pornhub has returned to the Australian market, but only within an age-assurance framework designed to restrict age-restricted content to verified adults.
