Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar Hailed for Saving Lives After Flydubai Cockpit Attack
NEW DELHI, October 7, 2026 — Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being praised for his courage and presence of mind after helping prevent a potential disaster aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
The incident occurred on September 30, when Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot while the aircraft was carrying 174 passengers. Despite being seriously injured, the Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and helping prevent the aircraft from remaining out of control.
Pilot Opens Cockpit Door During Emergency
According to Machchhar's account, he realised that the aircraft was rapidly descending after the attack. Drawing on his 17 years of flying experience, he understood that urgent action was needed.
Despite his injuries, he managed to reach and open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then entered the cockpit and helped restrain the co-pilot, while other pilots aboard the aircraft assisted in regaining control of the plane.
The aircraft eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with everyone aboard surviving the incident.
Captain Machchhar Speaks to PM Modi
After being transferred to Abu Dhabi for medical treatment, Machchhar spoke with Prime Minister **Narendra Modi** in a video call.
During the conversation, the pilot explained that he understood the aircraft was going down and knew he had to act despite his condition. He also credited the passengers and other people aboard the aircraft for playing an important role in bringing the emergency under control.
Prime Minister Modi praised Machchhar's courage, patience and quick decision-making, saying his actions helped save numerous lives.
The Prime Minister also wished the captain a full and speedy recovery and said that his actions had brought pride to Indians around the world.
Passengers and Other Pilots Also Played a Key Role
While Captain Machchhar's actions have received widespread recognition, reports emphasise that several people aboard the aircraft contributed to preventing the disaster.
Passengers entered the cockpit after the door was opened and helped restrain the attacker. Off-duty pilots who were travelling on the aircraft also assisted with stabilising the flight and completing the emergency landing.
This combined response gave the aircraft a chance to recover after its sudden descent.

Aircraft Safely Lands in Saudi Arabia
The Flydubai aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Machchhar and the co-pilot were later transferred from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates, where authorities continued their respective medical and investigative procedures. Machchhar remains in recovery.
Investigation Underway
Authorities in the region are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cockpit incident, including the motive behind the co-pilot's actions.
Officials have also been examining whether the incident was planned and whether it had any connection to terrorism. Those investigations remain ongoing, and authorities have not publicly established a final motive.
Indian Pilot Receives International Praise
Captain Machchhar's actions have attracted praise in India and abroad. Israeli officials have also publicly recognised his role in helping prevent the aircraft from becoming a major aviation disaster.
His response has highlighted the importance of pilot training, decision-making under extreme pressure and cooperation between passengers, crew members and other qualified pilots during an in-flight emergency.
For India, the incident has also become a story of national pride. Prime Minister Modi described Machchhar as a symbol of courage and said his actions demonstrated the professionalism and responsibility of Indian pilots.
A Story of Courage and Teamwork
The Flydubai incident could have ended very differently. Instead, the actions of Captain Smit Machchhar, passengers, crew members and other pilots helped bring the aircraft safely to the ground.
As Machchhar continues his recovery in Abu Dhabi, his story has emerged as one of courage under extraordinary pressure — and a reminder of how quick thinking and teamwork can make a critical difference during an aviation emergency.
