US-Iran Conflict Highlights Narendra Modi’s Strong and Friendly Global Leadership

New Delhi, September 2, 2026: As the United States and Iran exchange fresh military fire and tensions rise across the Middle East, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's approach to international diplomacy is once again drawing attention.

The latest escalation has renewed concerns about regional stability, global energy supplies and the security of millions of people living and working in the Gulf. At such a sensitive moment, India has continued to call for restraint and dialogue while maintaining communication with major powers across different sides of the conflict.

The situation highlights an important feature of Modi's foreign-policy approach: India has attempted to remain a strong strategic voice while keeping diplomatic channels open with countries that may not agree with one another.

A Leader Who Maintains Dialogue With Different Powers

One of Narendra Modi's most notable diplomatic strengths has been his ability to maintain working relationships with countries across competing geopolitical blocs.

India has strong strategic and economic relations with the United States, while also maintaining important ties with countries such as Russia and Iran. At the same time, New Delhi has developed close relationships with major Middle Eastern nations, including Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

This ability to communicate with different governments gives India a wider diplomatic space during international crises.

Modi has argued that difficult conflicts cannot be resolved through endless military escalation and that dialogue remains essential. His government's position has consistently emphasised peace, diplomacy and the protection of civilians while also defending India's own national interests.

Modi Meets Iran's President as Tensions Rise

The importance of India's diplomatic role was again underlined when Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the SCO summit.

According to recent reports, Pezeshkian sought India's help in efforts to reduce the conflict. Modi emphasised the importance of protecting civilians, commercial shipping and freedom of navigation while supporting efforts to restore peace and stability.

The meeting showed the level of diplomatic engagement India can maintain even during an active and highly dangerous international crisis.

India's message has been clear: New Delhi is prepared to speak with different sides, but it also wants to protect its national interests, including energy security, trade routes and the safety of Indian citizens abroad.

Strength Combined With a Friendly Approach

Modi's international style has often been defined by a combination of personal diplomacy and strategic firmness.

Being friendly with world leaders does not necessarily mean agreeing with them on every issue. India's foreign policy has frequently required the government to maintain relationships with countries that have serious disagreements with one another.

The strength of this approach lies in keeping communication open.

During the current Middle East crisis, this diplomatic flexibility has become especially valuable. India has major interests connected to the region, including oil and gas supplies, trade and a large Indian diaspora.

As the conflict has affected shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, Modi's government has had to focus not only on diplomatic statements but also on the practical consequences for India.

Putting India's National Interest First

A strong foreign policy is ultimately measured by how effectively it protects a country's people and interests.

For India, the Middle East conflict carries serious economic and security risks. A disruption in major energy routes can affect oil prices, trade and inflation.

Modi has previously stressed the importance of securing India's energy needs while also using diplomacy to reduce risks to commercial shipping.

Recent fighting between the United States and Iran has again increased fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, with renewed military exchanges contributing to volatility in global oil markets.

This makes India's diplomatic balancing act increasingly important.

India’s Growing Global Voice

Under Modi, India has increasingly attempted to position itself as an important voice in major international discussions.

The country's diplomatic approach has been built around strategic autonomy — maintaining strong partnerships without becoming completely dependent on any single power.

That approach allows India to maintain close engagement with the West while continuing important relationships with Russia, Iran and other countries.

During international conflicts, this gives Indian leaders greater flexibility to speak to multiple sides and encourage dialogue.

India's influence does not mean it can solve every international crisis. However, maintaining trust and communication with a broad range of countries can make India's voice more valuable during periods of uncertainty.

Leadership During Difficult Times

The latest US-Iran escalation demonstrates the difficulty of modern diplomacy.

Military action can rapidly affect countries far beyond the immediate conflict zone. Rising energy prices, disruptions to trade routes and threats to civilians can create global consequences.

For India, this requires a leadership approach that combines diplomacy with careful protection of national interests.

Modi's message has broadly remained focused on dialogue, restraint and peace while ensuring that India remains prepared to respond to the economic and strategic effects of a wider conflict.

This balance between friendship and strength has become one of the defining characteristics of his approach to global affairs.

Can India Help Reduce Tensions?

India is not a direct participant in the US-Iran conflict, and its ability to influence the decisions of Washington and Tehran has limits.

However, India remains one of the few major countries capable of maintaining meaningful engagement across a wide range of geopolitical relationships.

The fact that Iran's leadership has sought India's help in efforts to reduce the conflict reflects the importance of India's diplomatic relationships.

India's position may therefore continue to be significant as the international community looks for ways to prevent further escalation.

A Strong Voice for Peace and National Interest

Narendra Modi's leadership during major international crises has emphasised that diplomacy requires both strength and relationships.

A country must be able to defend its interests while maintaining communication with others — including countries that may disagree with one another.

As the US-Iran conflict continues to create uncertainty, Modi's approach shows why India's ability to speak with different global powers has become an increasingly important part of its foreign policy.

His strong personal diplomacy, willingness to maintain friendly relationships and focus on India's national interests have helped give New Delhi a distinctive position in global affairs.

At a time when military tensions are once again rising, India's role is likely to remain focused on one central objective: protecting its national interests while supporting dialogue, stability and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
