INDIA Bloc Protests Intensify as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Detained in Delhi
NEW DELHI, October 8, 2026 tensions intensified in the Indian capital as opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained during continuing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstrations are centred on allegations by opposition parties that recent revisions to electoral rolls under the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process have resulted in irregularities. The Election Commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have rejected the allegations.
Opposition Demands CEC's Resignation
The INDIA bloc has been demanding Kumar's resignation and has organised repeated demonstrations in New Delhi.
Opposition leaders say they want answers from the Election Commission regarding changes to voter lists and what they describe as discrepancies in the SIR exercise. The protests followed reporting about disagreements within the Election Commission over aspects of the voter-list revision process
The Election Commission has defended the voter-roll revision process, while the BJP has dismissed the opposition's allegations of manipulation.
Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Detained
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among the opposition leaders detained by Delhi Police as demonstrations continued.
On October 7, the two leaders and other lawmakers were detained after protesters attempted to move toward the Election Commission. Police had erected barricades around parts of central Delhi, and the demonstrations developed into a prolonged standoff.
Reuters reported that Rahul Gandhi and other opposition lawmakers were detained for the third time in two days as protests continued.
Protesters Seek Answers on Voter Rolls
The central issue behind the demonstrations is the revision of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties allege that changes to voter lists could affect eligible voters and have called for greater transparency from the Election Commission. They have also demanded that the commission address questions raised about the SIR process.
The Election Commission maintains that voter-roll revision is intended to ensure the accuracy of electoral registers and has rejected accusations of political manipulation. The BJP has similarly denied allegations that the process is designed to benefit the ruling party.

Police Cite Public Order Concern
Delhi Police have used barricades and restrictions on gatherings as the protests have continued across central Delhi.
Authorities have said police action is aimed at maintaining public order and managing large gatherings around sensitive government and electoral institutions. Several protesters and opposition lawmakers have been detained during the demonstrations and subsequently released.
The opposition has criticised the police response, arguing that its leaders should be permitted to peacefully present their concerns to election authorities.
Protests Spread Beyond Delhi
The dispute has not been limited to the national capital.
Demonstrations connected to the voter-roll issue have also been reported in other parts of India, with opposition groups continuing to raise concerns about the electoral revision process and demanding accountability from election authorities.
The continuing protests have made the voter-roll controversy a major political issue, with both the opposition and election authorities maintaining sharply different positions.
Political Tensions Remain High
The confrontation between opposition parties and the Election Commission comes amid broader political debate over electoral administration and voter rights.
For the INDIA bloc, the protests are intended to pressure the Election Commission to address its concerns and for Kumar to step down. The Election Commission and BJP, however, have maintained that the allegations are unfounded.
With demonstrations continuing and further protests planned, the dispute over voter-list revisions is likely to remain a prominent issue in Indian politics in the days ahead.
