Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia Leave 73 Injured as Regional Tensions Escalate

RIYADH, September 8, 2026 — Tensions between Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia have sharply escalated after a series of attacks struck southern parts of the kingdom, leaving at least 73 people injured and disrupting operations at several energy facilities.

Saudi authorities said the attacks targeted civilian and economic sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, while fires broke out at energy infrastructure in the region. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attacks, describing them as retaliation for recent Saudi military action in Yemen.

Multiple Saudi Cities Targeted

The attacks affected several locations across southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi officials said civilians, including women and children, were among those injured.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had carried out what he described as a large-scale operation involving missiles and drones. The Houthis claimed to have targeted Saudi Aramco facilities in Abha, Najran and Jazan, as well as a military airbase in Khamis Mushait.

Saudi officials have described the attacks as a serious escalation and a threat to the kingdom's security and sovereignty.

Energy Facilities Hit

The latest attacks have raised particular concern because some of the locations targeted are connected to Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure.

Fires were reported at several facilities, and Saudi authorities said operations at some energy sites were temporarily suspended while emergency crews dealt with the situation. Jazan is home to a major oil refinery, making the region strategically important to Saudi Arabia's energy sector.

Saudi Aramco has indicated that the immediate operational and financial impact remains limited, although the attacks have added fresh uncertainty to already volatile global energy markets.

Houthis Cite Saudi Military Operations in Yemen

The Houthis said their attacks were a response to Saudi military operations in Yemen.

The escalation follows renewed fighting between Houthi forces and troops aligned with Yemen's internationally recognised government, which is supported by Saudi Arabia. The Houthis have accused Riyadh of backing military operations against territories under their control.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has accused the Houthis of attacking civilian and economic infrastructure and threatening regional security.

Risk of Wider Regional Escalation

The latest confrontation comes after years of relative calm following the 2022 truce that significantly reduced large-scale fighting in Yemen.

The renewed hostilities have raised concerns that the conflict could once again expand across Yemen and into neighbouring countries. Saudi authorities have warned that they will take measures to respond to the attacks.

The developments are also unfolding amid wider instability across the Middle East, increasing concerns about the security of major shipping and energy routes.

Impact on Oil and Global Markets

The attacks have also put fresh pressure on global oil markets. The possibility of additional disruption to energy infrastructure and regional shipping routes has contributed to higher crude prices.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, remains particularly important for international trade. Any prolonged disruption in the surrounding region could increase transportation costs and create additional pressure on global energy supplies.

Saudi Arabia Faces a Critical Decision

Saudi Arabia now faces pressure to respond while avoiding an escalation that could develop into a wider regional conflict.

The latest attacks represent one of the most serious escalations between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia since the period of relative calm that followed the 2022 truce. With energy infrastructure affected and dozens of civilians injured, international attention is increasingly focused on whether diplomatic efforts can prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

For now, authorities in Saudi Arabia are assessing the damage, restoring affected facilities and preparing for possible further developments as tensions continue to rise across the region.
