Far-Right Victory in Germany: AfD Wins Historic Saxony-Anhalt Election

BERLIN, September 8, 2026 — Germany’s political landscape has shifted sharply after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a historic victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, winning around 44% of the vote and emerging as the largest political force in the state parliament.

The result marks the strongest regional performance in the AfD’s history and brings the party closer to potentially leading a state government for the first time in postwar Germany. However, the AfD did not win enough seats to govern alone, leaving the formation of the next state government uncertain.

AfD Records a Historic Result

The AfD won approximately 44% of the vote in Sunday's election, more than doubling its previous performance in Saxony-Anhalt.

The party is projected to hold 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament, leaving it three seats short of the 42 required for an outright majority. AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund described the result as historic and called on other political groups to consider cooperation.

The scale of the victory has attracted attention across Germany and Europe because the AfD has never previously led a state government.

CDU Suffers Major Setback

The election was also a major defeat for Chancellor **Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU)**.

The CDU received only around 17% of the vote, a dramatic decline from its previous result in the state. The outcome has triggered renewed debate within the party over its political strategy and the growing appeal of the AfD.

Merz has rejected cooperation with the AfD and reaffirmed the CDU's opposition to forming governing alliances with the party.

Germany's Political "Firewall" Faces a Test

One of the biggest questions following the election is whether Germany's long-standing political **"firewall"** against the AfD can survive the party's growing electoral strength.

Mainstream German parties have traditionally refused to form coalitions with the AfD because of its far-right positions and the classification of the party's Saxony-Anhalt branch as right-wing extremist by Germany's domestic intelligence authorities. The AfD rejects accusations that it is extremist.

With 39 seats, however, the party now needs support from other lawmakers if it wants to control the state government.

Coalition Options Remain Unclear

The election result does not automatically put the AfD in government.

The party would need additional support to reach a parliamentary majority. The **Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW)** crossed the threshold for parliamentary representation and won five seats, making it one possible source of support, although cooperation remains politically complicated.

Other mainstream parties have so far maintained their opposition to working with the AfD, meaning negotiations could produce a complicated governing arrangement.

Economic and Social Concerns Drive Voters

The AfD's success comes amid widespread dissatisfaction with Germany's political and economic situation

Issues including the cost of living, economic uncertainty, immigration, energy prices and dissatisfaction with the federal government have contributed to growing support for the party.

Reuters reported that a large majority of voters surveyed in Saxony-Anhalt expressed dissatisfaction with Merz's leadership, highlighting the broader frustration facing Germany's governing parties.

Wider Implications for German Politics

The result is being viewed as more than a regional election victory. It represents a significant challenge to Germany's established political order and could influence future national political debates.

The AfD has increasingly positioned itself as a major opposition force, while mainstream parties face pressure to address voters' concerns without abandoning their existing political boundaries.

The outcome could also influence Germany's 2029 federal election, particularly if the AfD manages to translate its strong regional support into broader national gains.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus will be on negotiations over the formation of Saxony-Anhalt's next government.

The AfD's historic result gives it significant political leverage, but its lack of an outright majority means it cannot govern alone. Whether other parties maintain the political firewall or whether a new form of cooperation emerges will determine the next stage of the state's political future

For Chancellor Merz and Germany's established parties, the result is a major warning that dissatisfaction among voters is reshaping the country's political landscape.
