Monsoon 2026 Arrives in Kerala, Bringing Relief After Weeks of Intense Heat



India's much-awaited southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, marking the beginning of the country's crucial four-month rainy season. The announcement by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) brings relief to millions of people who have been facing severe heatwave conditions across several states.

The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, around three days later than its normal onset date of June 1. Despite the slight delay, weather experts say conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance further into southern India over the coming days.



The arrival of the monsoon is especially important for India's agriculture sector, as nearly 70% of the country's annual rainfall comes during the June-to-September period. Farmers across the nation depend on these rains for sowing key crops such as rice, cotton, sugarcane, corn, and soybeans.

IMD has also issued heavy rainfall alerts for parts of Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and other southern regions. Several areas are expected to receive moderate to heavy showers, while thunderstorms and strong winds may affect some locations over the next few days







However, concerns remain over the overall performance of this year's monsoon. Earlier forecasts suggested that the 2026 monsoon season could be weaker than usual because of El Niño conditions. Experts warn that below-average rainfall could impact crop production, food prices, and economic growth if rainfall remains deficient during the critical months ahead.

For now, the arrival of the southwest monsoon has brought welcome relief from scorching temperatures and renewed hope for farmers, businesses, and communities that depend heavily on seasonal rainfall. As the monsoon progresses across the country, millions will be watching closely to see how the 2026 rainy season unfolds.
