India Enforces Follow-On Against Sri Lanka After Bowling Out Hosts for 290



Colombo, August 26, 2026: India tightened its grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo after bowling the hosts out for 290 and enforcing the follow-on on Day 4. India had declared their first innings at 503/9, giving them a commanding 213-run lead.

Sri Lanka's lower order offered determined resistance, led by Sonal Dinusha, who produced an impressive 103 off 162 balls. The century was Dinusha's second of the series after his strong performances in the opening Test at Galle. However, his effort could not prevent Sri Lanka from falling well short of India's first-innings total.



Dinusha Leads Sri Lanka's Resistance

Sri Lanka resumed Day 4 at 265/8, with Dinusha unbeaten on 85 and Lahiru Kumara providing support. The hosts needed another 39 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Dinusha reached his century with a boundary off Prasidh Krishna, continuing his remarkable run against India. He eventually fell for 103, with debutant spinner Saransh Jain taking the final wicket after KL Rahul completed the catch. Jain also dismissed Kumara for 12, finishing with his first Test wickets.

India's bowling attack was led by Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar, who claimed three wickets apiece. Saransh Jain finished with two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj also contributed to Sri Lanka's collapse.







India Enforces the Follow-On

With Sri Lanka dismissed for 290, India held a 213-run first-innings advantage, comfortably clearing the 200-run margin required to enforce the follow-on in a Test match.

India chose to make Sri Lanka bat again immediately rather than return to the crease themselves. The decision placed additional pressure on the hosts, who had already spent nearly 90 overs attempting to close the gap.

Sri Lanka's second innings initially brought some resistance. After reaching 83/2 at lunch, Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis built a significant partnership. By tea, Sri Lanka had moved to 199/3, with Sooriyabandara unbeaten on 90 and Mendis contributing 55 before his dismissal. The hosts had reduced the deficit to just 14 runs, keeping the contest alive.



India Remain in Command

India's dominant first innings laid the foundation for the follow-on. Devdutt Padikkal scored 117, while Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 115, helping India reach 503/9 before declaring. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also made valuable contributions.

The visitors currently remain in a strong position, but Sri Lanka's second-innings resistance means India cannot afford to relax. The hosts first need to erase the 213-run deficit before they can put India under pressure with a target.

With the second Test moving toward its decisive stages, India's follow-on decision has put them firmly in control, while Sri Lanka now face the challenge of extending the match into the final day.
