CBSE Relaxes Language Policy: Classes 7–9 Get More Foreign Language Choices

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major update to its language policy for students in **Classes 7, 8, and 9**, giving schools greater flexibility in implementing the three-language formula. The revised policy also allows schools to offer **two foreign language options**, providing students with more opportunities to develop global language skills.

The decision is part of CBSE's effort to modernize language education while aligning with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The board believes the updated framework will help students gain valuable multilingual abilities without adding unnecessary academic pressure.

More Flexibility for Schools

Under the revised guidelines, CBSE schools will have greater freedom in choosing language combinations based on teacher availability, infrastructure, and student demand. Alongside Indian languages, schools can now offer foreign languages as additional options, expanding learning opportunities for students.

The move aims to make language education more practical and adaptable to the needs of schools across the country.

Preparing Students for a Global Future

With international education and global careers becoming increasingly common, learning a foreign language has become an important skill. CBSE's revised policy is expected to help students improve communication abilities while increasing their exposure to different cultures and languages.

Education experts believe multilingual learning can enhance cognitive development, boost confidence, and create better opportunities in higher education and future employment.

Positive Response from Schools

Many school administrators and educators have welcomed the revised policy, saying it offers greater flexibility in designing language programs according to students' interests and available teaching resources.

Parents have also appreciated the change, viewing it as a step toward providing children with more meaningful learning choices while reducing rigid academic requirements.

A Step Towards Modern Education

The updated language policy reflects CBSE's continued focus on creating a more flexible and student-centered education system. By relaxing the traditional three-language framework and allowing additional foreign language choices, the board hopes to prepare students for an increasingly interconnected world.

As schools begin implementing the new guidelines, students in Classes 7 to 9 are expected to benefit from broader language options, stronger communication skills, and improved readiness for future academic and professional opportunities.
