Apple's Big Reveal: Foldable iPhone Duo Could Debut at $2,000

CUPERTINO, September 9, 2026 — Apple is preparing for one of its most significant product launches in years, with the company widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at its major September product event in Cupertino, California.

The device has been widely rumored to be called the iPhone Duo, although Apple has not officially confirmed the name. Reports indicate the foldable could start at around $2,000 for a 256GB model, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone ever released.

Apple's First Foldable iPhone

The rumored iPhone Duo would represent Apple's first major new iPhone form factor since the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017.

Unlike conventional iPhones, the device is expected to use a book-style folding design. When opened, the larger internal display could provide a tablet-like experience while retaining a more compact form when folded. Reports suggest the device could measure around 5.5 inches when closed and approximately 7.8 inches when unfolded.

Apple's decision to enter the foldable market comes years after competitors such as Samsung, Huawei, Google and Motorola introduced their own folding smartphones.

$2,000 Price Tag Could Make It Apple's Most Expensive iPhone

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the new device is its expected price.

According to the latest reports, the iPhone Duo could start at approximately $2,000, with higher-storage versions potentially approaching $3,000. The reported starting configuration is expected to include 256GB of storage.

Such pricing would position the device firmly in the ultra-premium smartphone segment and significantly above Apple's conventional iPhone models.

The high price is also likely to reflect the engineering challenges involved in producing a thin foldable device with a durable hinge, flexible display and sufficient battery capacity.

Focus on Durability and Design

Apple has reportedly spent years working on foldable-display technology before deciding to bring a device to market.

One of the company's biggest challenges will be convincing consumers that its foldable can deliver the durability and reliability expected from an iPhone. Hinge durability, display creasing, dust resistance and water resistance remain important issues across the foldable smartphone industry.

Apple is reportedly aiming to differentiate the device through its hardware design and software integration rather than simply matching existing foldable phones.

A New Experience for iPhone Users

The larger internal display could allow Apple to introduce new multitasking capabilities.

Reports suggest the foldable may support side-by-side applications and a more iPad-like interface when fully opened. Apple Pencil support has also been reported, although these features remain unconfirmed until Apple officially announces the product.

The challenge for Apple will be making the larger screen genuinely useful rather than simply presenting it as a novelty.

First Major Product Event for CEO John Ternus

The launch also carries significance because it will be the first major Apple product event led by John Ternus, who became the company's CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook.

Ternus previously served as Apple's hardware chief and has been closely involved in the company's product development. His first major keynote as CEO therefore gives the event additional importance for investors, consumers and the wider technology industry.

The event is expected to showcase the premium iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the company's first foldable device.

Apple Enters a Growing Foldable Market

Apple's entry could significantly change the competitive landscape for foldable smartphones.

Foldables currently represent only a small portion of the global smartphone market, but the category is expected to grow. Analysts cited by Reuters believe Apple could capture a substantial share of the premium foldable segment after entering the market.

Samsung has held an early advantage in the category, while Google and other manufacturers have also expanded their foldable offerings. Apple's reputation and enormous iPhone customer base could bring foldable smartphones to a much wider audience.

October Availability Reported

Even if the device is unveiled on September 9, reports indicate that customers may have to wait longer before they can purchase it.

The latest reports suggest the iPhone Duo could go on sale as early as October, potentially after the iPhone 18 Pro models become available.

Apple has not yet confirmed the final name, specifications, pricing or release date.

A Major Test for Apple's Foldable Strategy

The rumored iPhone Duo represents more than another addition to Apple's product lineup. It is a test of whether the company can turn foldable smartphones from a niche category into a mainstream premium product.

If Apple can combine a reliable folding mechanism with strong battery life, useful software features and the familiar iPhone ecosystem, the device could reshape the market.

For now, however, consumers will have to wait for Apple's official presentation before the company confirms exactly what its first foldable iPhone will offer.
